Marketing
PSEB promotes the
image of the Pakistan IT industry in key markets abroad, enables
trade interaction with international parties, and facilitates
the entry of multi-national development and support centres into
Pakistan.

Over the last year,
PSEB has sponsored participation of ninety four member companies
in fourteen international tradeshows and delegations, sponsored
eleven domestic conferences, developed joint action plans with
five foreign governments or industry associations, participated in
forty one TV interviews, eight radio interviews, and forty two
magazine interviews and articles, and has issued over ninety press
releases.

In addition, four
international promotional campaigns were run. Almost two hundred
and eighty two leads were directly passed on to member companies
in addition to over a thousand indirect leads. Most potential
customers and investors contact PSEB member companies directly
after getting information from the PSEB website which receives a
million hits each month with seventy percent of the hits received
from overseas.

An MoIT/PSEB
delegation comprising Secretary IT, MD PSEB and Director Marketing
PSEB undertook a visit to Texas, New York and California – holding
meetings with the Governor of Texas, senior Government officials,
and industry leaders. Presentations were made at IBM headquarters
and at OPEN (Organization of Pakistani Entrepreneurs of North
America) Forum. The visit has resulted in several trade and
investment leads.

PSEB is
co-organizing ITCN in Karachi from August 9 – 11 together with
E-Commerce Gateway. A CEO Forum is also being organized on August
10th which will include international corporate leaders, investors
and authors. Entitled “Corporate Success in the Knowledge
Economy”, the conference is expected to provide value to CEOs from
IT, Telecom, Banks and the Energy sector.

PSEB held a
networking session with Mr. Mark Ellison,
Managing Director, Texas Emerging Technology Fund and with Mr.
Faisal Amin, President Texas Trade Council (TTC) and US Honorary
Investment Consular, in Islamabad on Thursday, June 28. Federal
Secretary for Information Technology, Farrakh Qayyum, was the
Chief Guest. The event was attended by various businessmen and
leading IT professionals. PSEB also signed an MoU with TTC during
the event.

Strategy
Gartner is making progress on its
Pakistan IT Industry Report. The PSEB Strategy and Research
Department and other stakeholders are working to address a large
number of Gartner queries and requests for information. A draft
report is expected around the time of the PSEB CEO Forum at ITCN
on August 10, 2007, where stakeholders will be able to network
with Dr. Tony Murphy, Gartner Engagement Manager.
Office Space Provision
PSEB plans to build IT Parks in different cities and
currently operates over 750,000 square feet of Software
Technology Parks (STP) in eleven buildings across the country.

The
advertisement for inviting proposals from reputed
international IT park developers was published both
internationally and locally on 9th of June, 2007. The Pre Bid
conference was held on
July 10, 2007.

Industry HR
PSEB works with
the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to increase the influx
of quality graduates into the industry, facilitates matching
of graduates with IT companies, provides on-going trainings
and certifications to professionals, and undertakes research
to benchmark IT professionals and graduates in the country.

To date, seven
hundred and ten IT professionals have participated in
PSEB-sponsored trainings and around three thousand interns
have been placed.

A
PSEB-sponsored, four-month English language training program
for two hundred nominees from fifty member companies is being
conducted by Berlitz at Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad.

PSEB sponsored
Rational Rose training for sixteen IT professionals from ten
member companies was conducted from 15th to 19th of June,
2007.

PSEB
has received twenty four applications for its
Apprenticeship Program which are undergoing
revision. Additional companies are invited to
submit proposals for this widely haled program
which is designed to address human capital needs
in the short term.

Public Policy
PSEB
facilitates the creation of a public policy
environment including taxes, tariffs, trade, and
intellectual property protection to enable the
growth of the IT industry.

PSEB has signed
a contract with highly reputed law firm,
M/s Jamil and Jamil, to draft the Data
Confidentiality Law and Framework.

Following
interaction with the IT and Telecom
industry, PTA has prepared a Recommended
Framework for IP Telephony, which is
available at the PTA website
www.pta.gov.pk. This document will be
evolved into regulation governing IP
Telephony. PTA is inviting further
feedback and we encourage our PSEB
member companies to do so.

PSEB
is now offering data node services in
its newly established STP in Karachi –
Tariq Center. Service can be
provisioned within a day.

Industry Finance
PSEB is working with stakeholders to
create a financing and funding ecosystem
for the IT industry.

PSEB has
invited leading international
Venture Capitalists, VC lawyers,
fund managers and banks to attend
its CEO Forum on August 10th in
Karachi. PSEB will also conduct a
coaching and mentoring workshop
for growth stage IT companies at
the conference.

Company
Capability Development
PSEB sponsors quality and
information security certification
of IT companies in order to
enhance their international
competitiveness.

Under PSEB-sponsored
programs, Pakistan now has
over 110 ISO-certified IT
companies, over fifty ISO IT
lead auditors, and will have
over 20 CMMi rated companies
by the end of the current
year – making it a world
leader in this category.
Currently, there is one CMMi
L5 company, one CMM L5
company, three CMMi L3
companies, three CMMi L2
company, one ISO 27001
certified company, two SEI
Transition Partner companies
and two SCAMPI appraisers.

Techlogix, a global
consulting and IT services
company, has achieved CMMi
L2.

PSEB has received four
proposals from ISO 27001
audit companies for
membership of the PSEB
Information Security Audit
panel. Final selections
will be made after
technical and financial
evaluations.

Facilitation
PSEB facilitates IT companies
in their interaction with
various Government agencies
and also launches programs in
areas of strategic importance
where the private sector is
shy of investing. In the last
year, the Open Source Centre
has conducted twenty six
workshops, training over four
hundred and fifty people,
facilitated one migration, and
published internationally
recognizing training
toolkits..

In the current calendar
year, visa processing
has been facilitated for
over one hundred and
seventy one individuals.
Foreign currency
remittance NOCs for
purchase of software
were processed and
issued to fifty nine
companies, and corporate
advisory services have
been provided to
numerous companies and
individuals.

Sixteen new IT
companies were
registered with PSEB
in the month of June
2007 in addition to
seven call centres.
Forty two IT companies
and two call centres
have renewed their
registrations.

Under PSEB’s OSRC
(Open Source
Resource Centre)
Project, six
training workshops
and one migration
were conducted in
Kohat.

GBMS (Global Business
Management Solution) –
an ERP for the
Readymade Garments and
Hosiery sector,
developed by AZM
Computer Services
under a PSEB program –
was launched at a
ceremony held at PC
Lahore on June 2,
2007. The Chief Guest
at the ceremony was
Federal Minister for
IT and Telecom.
Partners included the
Business Support Fund
(BSF) and industry
associations PRGMEA
and PHMA, while the
sponsor was IBM. The
product has already
driven down cost, has
increased productivity
and quality at model
units and will help
increase the
international
competitiveness of
this vital industry.
